Johan Maurits departs to Recife in Brasil

On October 26, 1636, Johan Maurits leaves from Texel with 4 ships towards Recife in Dutch Brasil to take upon him the function of Gouvenor-General, Captain-General and Admiral-General of all Dutch Brasilian possesions. Johan Maurits was appointed in this function in August 1636 by the State-General of the West India Company. The appointment would be for 5 years. The function titles granted Johan Maurits absolute power over all land in sea forces. Johan Maurits would become chairman of the new High Counsel and Secret Board.
